Message from Clare Redmond, Consultant Psychiatrist at NHS Practitioner Health
I joined NHS Practitioner Health in 2020, initially working two days per week. My experience of the service was so positive that I gradually increased my commitment to four days per week. It is a hugely rewarding role.
My experience as a general adult psychiatrist has been in an inner-city community mental health team and an early intervention in psychosis team. Practitioner health offers something unique: the opportunity to treat health and care professionals in a setting where there is time to truly understand their mental health needs and develop collaborative, personalised plans for their care. The work is clinically stimulating and varied. Many patients have not felt able to seek support through local services, and the breadth and complexity of mental health and addiction presentations allows me to draw on my psychiatric training and experience.
One of the greatest strengths of the service is its supportive and highly skilled mix of staff. Regular MDT meetings bring together psychiatrists, GPs, mental health nurses and therapists, ensuring that patients benefit from a wealth of expertise and shared decision making. The team culture is extremely positive and supportive. The role also offers an excellent work-life balance. Working remotely provides flexibility, with no on-call commitments, and there are numerous opportunities to connect with colleagues through MDTs, informal coffee catchups and regional face to face away days. The CPD programme is excellent.
I would encourage consultant psychiatrists considering a role with NHS Practitioner Health to explore the opportunity, and I would be delighted to speak with any colleagues who would like to hear more about working within the team.

Mental Health Nurse
Do you want to support fellow NHS and care colleagues struggling with their own mental health? Over the last 18 years we have helped more than 40,000 NHS and care staff stay in work or return to the jobs they love.
NHS Practitioner Health (PH) is the award winning National (England wide) service for doctors, dentists and health and care staff with mental health and addiction issues which may be affecting their ability to work safely and effectively or return to work. The service aims to deliver positive outcomes in relation to -
· improvement in mental health and social functioning
· numbers returning to work/retraining
· reduction in risk to patients and the public
· reduction in regulatory involvement
We are looking to expand our clinical workforce and are seeking applications from experienced mental health nurses (ideally with a prescribing qualification) to join our dedicated First Contact Team (FCT) supporting healthcare professionals working in the NHS.
The FCT is the front door to all the pathways at PH. This role is key in the delivery of a high quality, effective service to our patients, ensuring they are seen rapidly and by the most appropriate person within the team. The post holder will be required to carry out triage for new contacts and referrals, assessments of new patients, ongoing case management and liaison with other providers who might be involved in the care of the patients. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team which includes GPs, psychiatrists and therapists.
The role can be delivered predominantly online, with regular regional in person multidisciplinary CPD and networking events. Working hours Monday – Friday only and are flexible between 8am – 8pm. We will consider both full and part time applications.
Please note we have a strict three-year gap between accessing the service as a patient and working with the service as a clinician. We understand that PH work can be challenging and want to ensure people have enough time to focus on their own recovery before taking on the issues of others.
