Understanding and managing your emotions
We are delighted to announce the launch of Understanding Your Emotions, a new eBook written by NHS Practitioner Health’s Medical Director, Dr Zaid Al-Najjar, alongside two of our highly experienced therapists, Ruth Deighton and Simon Lyne.
Drawing on years of clinical practice, lived experience, and countless conversations with health and care staff, the book offers practical insights and compassionate guidance to help professionals better understand and manage the emotional impact of their work.

Since its launch, Practitioner Health has supported over 38,000 health and care professionals. This eBook captures the expertise of Zaid, Ruth and Simon as Understanding Your Emotions interlaces learning through real life stories (anonymised and blended to protect confidentiality). These cases reflect common challenges and offer practical, compassionate approaches for working through them.
The book also builds on their Understanding Your Emotions Podcast, which explores themes such as shame, anger, low mood, and anxiety.
Together, the podcast and eBook provide a reflective, accessible space for staff to make sense of the emotional impact of their work.
There is no need to register with Practitioner Health to access these resources – both the eBook and podcast series are available to access freely and confidentially by any health or care professional.

The eBook will be released on Friday, 10th October 2025, to coincide with World Mental Health Day.
